Grade Level (K-6) Descriptions

Welcome to the International School of Aruba (ISA)! Below, you will find an overview of our comprehensive academic programs for each grade level (K-6), covering Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts (ELA).

Our curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning, aligned with rigorous international standards.

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Math

Students engage with Eureka Math, building a strong foundation in number sense, basic operations, and problem-solving skills. Emphasis is placed on understanding mathematical concepts through hands-on activities and real-world applications, guided by the Common Core Standards.

Science

Our science program follows the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), introducing
young learners to the fundamentals of life, physical, and earth sciences through exploration,
observation, and inquiry-based learning.

Social Studies

Aligned with the National Social Studies Standards, students begin exploring their
communities, cultures, and the basics of geography, history, and civics, developing an early
appreciation for the world around them.

English Language Arts (ELA)

We implement a Balanced Literacy approach, emphasizing phonics for foundational literacy
skills. Students engage in guided reading, writing, and interactive read-alouds to develop
comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency, in alignment with the Common Core Standards.

3rd – 5th Grade

Science

Under the NGSS, students explore more complex scientific concepts such as ecosystems, energy,
and earth’s systems. Hands-on experiments and scientific inquiry help students develop a deeper
understanding of the natural world.

Social Studies

Students expand their knowledge of history, geography, economics, and civics through engaging
projects and discussions. Our curriculum, based on the National Social Studies Standards,
encourages critical thinking about global issues and cultural diversity.

English Language Arts (ELA)

Our Balanced Literacy approach continues, with a greater focus on reading comprehension,
literary analysis, and writing. Students explore various genres and develop advanced grammar
and vocabulary skills, following the Common Core Standards for ELA.

6th Grade

Math

The Eureka Math curriculum in 6th grade prepares students for more advanced topics such as ratios, percentages, and introductory algebra.

The Common Core Standards ensure a strong mathematical foundation, fostering analytical thinking.

Science

Aligned with the NGSS, 6th-grade science covers topics like forces, motion, and earth science.
Students conduct experiments, analyze data, and apply scientific principles to real-world
scenarios.

Social Studies

The focus shifts to more global perspectives, including ancient civilizations, world geography,
and current events.
